Finding hope on the other side

Candelaria, an indigenous Mayan woman, gave birth to Mayra when she was 22 in Guatemala. Mayra was born with a cloaca, a rare condition where her anus, urethra, and vagina are fused together.

She came to the United States seeking medical care, but the linguistic and cultural barriers proved nearly impossible. With the help of the Center, and the pediatric surgeons at the Nicklaus Children's Hospital in Miami, Mayra has begun to undergo the complicated surgeries that will change her life forever.
