"Their leaders say they are dealing daily with people afraid to leave their homes for fear of arrest, some of them are facing the end of temporary protected status as soon as April 1. They are wary that any collaboration with ICE will harm the community's relationships with local police and lead to racial profiling.
They said videos posted to social media this month showing PBSO deputies working alongside ICE agents to detain people in Lake Worth Beach had unnerved immigrants across the county.
"People are going to stop reporting crimes," said Mariana Blanco of the Guatemalan-Maya Center in Lake Worth Beach. "That puts our communities in a further vulnerable state. If they were already vulnerable, they're going to be much easier targets.""
